What is an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)?

Individualized Education Plan or program is also termed as IEP. This is a specialized program that has been designed especially for those children who have different learning disabilities and they also receive specialized instruction according to their learning needs. IEP goals are being developed by stakeholder members like- parents, general teachers, special education teachers, school leaders, occupational therapists, evaluators, and students(occasionally).
 

4 Stages of Developing an IEP Goals

Let’s get to know what are the 4 stages of developing an individualized education plan for children with special education needs.

1. Understand Your Student’s Needs

With the help of a strength-based approach to know student’s abilities and learning needs.

In this stage you should focus on:
 

  • Figure out students’ strengths, interests, and any other challenges or barriers they are facing in their learning journey.

2. Collaborate With Other Stakeholders

  • Observe and review the learning environment for students.
  • Monitor the plan execution and provide updates in the next meeting with stakeholders.

3. Adjust To Meet The Student’s Needs

You must consider building an engaging and encouraging learning environment for students by making certain adjustments and using suitable teaching strategies to meet the special need student’s different learning needs. You can also consider using the principle of Universal design for learning (UDL) to make this step more effective.

In this stage you should focus on:
 

  • Teaching the skills effectively.
  • Provide proper opportunity to practice the skill.
  • Reinforce the skills.
  • Include other stakeholder members to target particular skills to develop.

4. Evaluate & Monitor The Effectiveness of IEP Goals

The goal of developing an individual education plan for children with special educational needs is to support their learning needs which may change with educational progression and changed learning needs.

So, it’s a good idea to evaluate and monitor IEP goals with other stakeholders in each term to see whether it need any adjustment or modification or not by constantly evaluating and monitoring.
